Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a joke ?
Nope, it’s not a joke :-)

What’s the Pirate Party ?
It’s a political organization that promotes education, culture, reform of legislations regarding copyright and information laws. It also supports the abolition of patents on software and living things. The pirate party endorses transparency in public policies, the protection of personal data and strives for open governance.

Is this a nerd/geek thing?
No, these principles carry a societal project, they constitute a particular concept and a vision for society which both go well beyond defending internet users only.

Then what are you standing for?
All political parties have a battle cry: socialism, liberalism, nationalism, etc.. The pillars of the Pirates’ fight are open governance, investing in education, innovation, research, information technology and communication, resolving issues related to intellectual property and the free flow of ideas, the influence of the pharmaceutical and entertainment industry, the protection of individual data and transparency of public action

Our priorities in two words : Knowledge and Openness

The Pirates believe that democracy and knowledge are interrelated, that setting up a democracy requires promoting education and a knowledgeable society .
The awful state of education in Morocco, standing Among the 22 Arab countries with the highest illiteracy rate and a disastrous indicator of human development.

Education is mandatory. Beyond it being a right, it’s a duty. Transparency is another duty. The Pirates are promoting "open governance". The latter is a doctrine and a form of government which is to ensure that public affairs can be open and accessible at all levels. We strive for Citizens to regain control and increase their participation to improve and enhance the legitimacy of political action. This involves thoroughly reviewing the processes in functioning political institutions and administrations.

These two duties: education and transparency, open the door to the right, which is THE law. The Pirates are legal: they know that the law is the "source code" of society. That’s Why they put it above all other considerations and are committed to changing it.

How did the political party come to life ?
The Pirate Party was born in Sweden in 2006. Originally, the Pirate Party was created as a result of, or rather thanks to the media coverage of the trial lost against the entertainment industry about creating a platform for file exchange: www.thepiratebay.org (TPB).

In May 2009, it became the third largest Swedish party in membership. The student branch of the Pirate Party is the largest political organization of young people in Sweden. And as of June 2009, the Pirate Party makes it to the European Parliament. Pirate parties are then created in 30 countries. In Belgium, the Pirate Party (established in September 2009) took part of the parliamentary elections of June 2010, like other Pirate Party in Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain and Australia
.
In Morocco, the pirate party is the result of a bunch of young people who’ve come to meet through activist work and other non-profit activities.

Why Pirates ?
Because that’s how the entertainment industry calls those who access or use information and/or culture without paying.

I am a Pirate, you are a Pirate, we are all Pirates. Why should I be deprives from accessing information, why should I be prosecuted and thrown in jail knowing that we live in a society where technologies allow access to information, culture and knowledge?

Pirates are regular citizens who want to change the rules of the game.

We want to « hack » our way in to current political institutions in order to create new ones with a new way of thinking, acting and debating. We want to get out of typical (failing) thinking modes.

Why a party ?
Because we do not exclude becoming one. Because Politics in Morocco need to become a way and means that allow people to express their views and have a weight in the events unfolding in their country.

How’s the pirate party creation process progressing with regards to the authorities ?
The Moroccan Pirate Party doesn’t lawfully exist yet. At this point, young people who are involved in several forms of activism and non-profit are working on it.

Because of the « legislative package » that’s undergoing modifications (Electoral Code, Law on political parties, decentralization laws, redistricting, …), but also because we want to take the time to listen, discuss, reflect and comprehend before we can explain and communicate what we’ve heard from the people in a formalized way. We have not yet filed the application official with the Ministry of the Interior. This will be done when we are ready.

How can I become a member of the Moroccan Pirate Party ?
The Pirate Party does not yet exist in the eyes of the law. This does not prevent us from acting, discussing and raising awareness. If you are interested in our project or if you have any questions, please fill out the contact form. We will contact you in any case.

How can I participate, contribute/ help?
If you want to make a donation (however small or large it may be, your participation counts), please contact us via the contact form.
Anyway, any help, your time/ideas/suggestions/skills and/or financial contributions are welcome. You can help by writing an article for the site or propose an activity or project, follow the national and international news, make translations or bring your knowledge of graphics / legal / economic / computer …. Welcome if you want to advocate the cause of Pirates.

How would you describe your position in the political scene compared with other traditional political parties ?
We are neither left wing nor right. We do not feel concerned by these categories from the 19th century and which come from Europe. The Pirates come from different backgrounds and have different world views. The Pirates are free to have their own opinion and their own point of view. We try to listen to everyone, to work with everyone then come up with conclusions. We believe that diversity is a strength, not weakness

In Morocco, where the political scene is still very traditional and focuses on rather populist issues , how can a party with such revolutionary ideas convince and offset?

The Pirate Party has three major advantages up his sleeve:
It is a "grass roots" or "bottom-up" approach to the project and its ideas are supported by private citizens, not by the Makhzen, syndicate, company or another party;
The Pirates consider youth as an asset, as the barometer of social change, and not as a separate category of society, which would have its own problems. Moroccan youth is the future of the country and is the multitude: it is what we address as a priority;
The Pirate Party has ideas and a vision of society. These ideas – promoting public education and transparency of public action and defend the rights of citizens – are a social plan we share with Moroccans.
In other words, the Pirate Party is a grassroots initiative, led by youth and directed to all Moroccans with a social project.

Why is your website ugly ?
Because shoemakers usually wear the ugliest shoes. We are working on completely rewriting the site, to make it more attractive. But feel free to send us your suggestions. Also, having a site full of pretty words and pretty pictures does not replace relevant content and a mature reflection, and so the time we could spend coding up our website, we dedicate to sharing with our members, engaging with citizens and working on our files and records.

What does your logo represent?
It is the top part of a boat sailing, inflated by the wind. This logo is the symbol of all the Pirate Party in the world, each adapting to his country.
